Drawing on myriad images from European art and architecture, these fanciful and sometimes fearsome creatures are often seen as guardians to ward off negative forces. Frequently, they are being formed for multiple parts of different creatures such as lions, bats, dragons, apes and humans. They are often referred to as "gargoyles", though that specific term relates to a grotesque that is made into a drain spout for a building. In working with mythology and metaphysical energy, the imagery of grotesques can be a powerful symbolic tool.
